Firearms and Weapons

John Sutton

The Queensland parliament has determined that the rights of individuals to possess and use firearms and other weapons are subordinate to the need to ensure public and individual safety. Furthermore, it has been decided that public and individual safety is best ensured by imposing strict controls on the possession of weapons and requiring the safe and secure storage and carriage of weapons. These principles underpin the Weapons Act 1990 which regulates the possession, and storage, of firearms and weapons in Queensland and contraventions of which can constitute a serious criminal offence.

This page sets out the most common firearm and weapons offences, and includes what the police must prove in relation to each of them as well as the maximum, and minimum, penalties which apply.
